New FAST way to increased accuracy of the
Optidew Cooled Mirror Hygrometer |

Michell
instruments has developed a new technology to increase the accuracy
and reliability of their cooled mirror instruments. The Frost Assurance
System Technology (FAST) works by ensuring that, for temperatures below
0°C, the ‘dew point’ reading is always taken from the formation of ice
crystals, rather than water droplets. The new system is now being
incorporated into the Optidew range of cooled mirror instruments.
Although these hygrometers are already highly accurate, being able to
give moisture readings down to a level of -40°Cdp, some applications
need even higher levels of accuracy. Water doesn’t always freeze at 0°C
– in some circumstances super-cooled water can exist at much lower
temperatures. This can be caused by contaminants in the gas being tested
for moisture, or even build up of residue on the cooled mirror surface.
Super-cooled water condenses at a slightly different temperature to
‘normal’ ice formation, and the errors involved are typically equal to

of Stuttgart. Leuze electronic participated in this project as a
cooperation and development partner for the necessary opto-electronic
safety sensor technology. GOALIAS is an automated goalkeeper that can
even stop the penalties of the German premier division club, VfB
Stuttgart. To do this it has to be able to cover the entire 7.32 m wide

Electric: The new ZDDM 050T sheet sensor from Baumer ensures the
high quality of bound print products in collating machines. For this
task, a 60 x 80 mm image is taken of every sheet at a specified point in
rapid sequence and this image is compared to a previously taught
reference image. The fully integrated image analysis system activates a
simple switching output (accept/reject). Based on this information,
corrective actions may be initiated in the machine. The Accept/Reject
signal is presented on a display together with additional information.
If necessary, individual images or additional information for sheet
recognition can be retrieved via Ethernet. An intelligent teach-in
process performed at the beginning of every print run ensures optimal
recognition of the sheets. In Run mode, up to 10 sheets per second are

KROHNE UFM 3030 won the prize for "Most advanced flow technology
for measuring biofuels" at the ISA ExpoControl 2008 international trade
fair. Alternative fuels was one of the most discussed topics at this
year's fair in Mexico. Jonathan Fiedler, one of the KROHNE product
specialists, gave a well-attended presentation on the topic of
"Measuring alternative fuels". Mexico is planning to increase the
portion of domestically produced bioethanol when manufacturing
automobile gas, thus promoting its own oil industry in the long term.

a short time after introducing its new single-channel measurement
systems, Micro-Epsilon is now offering a new capacitive multi-channel
measurement system, which guarantees extremely high resolution and
accuracies. According to the manufacturer, the new capaNCDT500 provides
a resolution in the range of hundredths of a nanometre and supersedes
the existing capaNCDT600 series. An Ethernet port with 24-bit resolution
is available, so that data obtained can be output as error-free as
possible. The new system is modular in its design and can accept up to
eight measuring channels, depending on requirements. For this, the
controllers, in all the major European card formats, are inserted in the
housing. A version with an integrated preamplifier, as well as one with
an external preamplifier, are available, which enables cable lengths of

conditioning module for any sensor that produces a 0-5Vdc output signal.
The SSC unit, which retails in the UK for less than £35 for OEM
quantities, is housed in an IP68 rated rugged metal enclosure and is
suitable for OEMs wanting to convert sensor output voltage signals to a
4-20mA current signal. The SSC is easy to use and features many options
for a flexible-set up. As a result it suits a variety of applications,
for example transmitting the output signal of a rotary position sensor
linked to a steam valve in a power generating plant, over a long
distance to a control room. SSC reliably converts a sensor’s output
voltage signal to a 4-20mA (or optional 5-19mA) current output, or by
using additional module cards, into a variety of different voltage

The new COMPACTplus-XSS/R Safety Light Curtains (XSS: eXtended Shape
Scanning) are used with roll printing processes. They guard the access
area when feeding in rectangular objects, such as paper rolls in the
print and paper industry, for example. Similar to Muting – the properly
intended and time-limited suppression of the safety function – the
Safety Light Curtain mounted at a tilt detects the paper roll where the
rolls are fed in on the basis of its closed rectangular shape, and
allows it to pass as an access-allowed object. A person entering the
COMPACTplus-XSS/R protective field is detected as an access-denied
object on the basis of their contour and their movements, and the
dangerous movement is stopped instantly. This solution reduces the
expenses for the user compared with previous Muting solutions, because
no separate Muting sensors and Muting indicators are required. A side

transmitters that are totally crevice-free after assembly. The brazing
technique that the company has developed has made the use of internal
O-ring seals obsolete for many applications. The parts that come into
contact with the media are made from stainless steel (AISI 316L) in the
Series 22 S transmitters. In the Series 22 M the steel piezoresistive
pressure measuring cell is brazed to the brass pressure connection using
a nickel diaphragm. Brazing in tunnel furnaces has considerable cost
advantages in comparison to the usual electron beam welding at measuring

sensors for optical distance measurement of direct reflecting materials
are now available from Micro-Epsilon. Designated as the optoNCDT
1700DR, this new series expands the manufacturer’s already extensive
sensor family. Three sensors with the measuring ranges of 2mm, 10mm and
20mm are designed specifically for use with polished metals, glass or
chrome-plated products. The high measuring rate of 2.5kHz and the
maximum resolution of 0.1µm make precise measurement of the desired
targets possible. The reflected laser beam is guided into the receiving
array by tilting the sensor and is then directly converted into an
electrical signal by the integrated controller. The design is identical
to the successful optoNCDT 1700 standard series. As well as the
integrated controller, the series also incorporates a foil keypad
directly on the sensor, whereby adjustments without configuration
