Sensors for Water Treatment Applications

Sensors for Water Treatment ApplicationsWater treatment applications place high demands on pressure and level measuring instruments. For these applications, Baumer offers robust sensors which are suitable for high vibrations as well as for the use with aggressive media. For example, sensors made of seawater-resistant Hastelloy C and with a ceramic sensing element are available for desalination plants. Flush mount versions are offered for sewage applications. The devices can be easily configured on PC via the FlexProgrammer 9701. Pressure and level measuring devices for water treatment applications have to be extremely robust. First of all, this concerns the materials used in instruments that are in contact with aggressive or corrosive media in applications such as desalination plants or sewage sludge processing. In addition, the devices have to be highly resistant against vibrations which are generated continuously for example in applications with volumetric pumps. Further challenges are the formation of foam, suspended solids, and condensation in tanks. For these challenges, Baumer offers an extensive portfolio of pressure and level sensors ...

Differential pressure measurement with even better zero-point accuracy

SDP600 series differential pressure sensorsThe first dynamic digital differential pressure sensor from Sensirion, the SDP600 series, was awaited with great anticipation. This was hardly surprising, since the advance specifications of the small, fully calibrated sensor included outstanding long-term stability and a short response time along with high accuracy and sensitivity, even with very small differential pressures (less than 10 Pa). Accumulated practical experience with the sensor and test results now show that the performance exceeds the high standard of the advance specifications. In particular, the range of zero-point variation is three times less than expected. The maximum deviation from the zero point was originally specified as 0.5 Pa, but now it has been restated as 0.2 Pa. The SPD600 series also solidly fulfils its expectations with regard to reliability and other specifications. With this, the new sensor achieves ...

Tyco Electronics Reluctance Resolvers for Hybrid Applications

Reluctance ResolversTyco Electronics: New emission legislation and the trend towards energy efficient transportation support an increased development in the area of hybrid propulsion for passenger cars. One of the key applications for improved fuel economy in the hybrid market is the recovery and storage of energy during the braking phase or regenerative braking. When braking, the energy of the moving car is converted and stored in the Li-ion batteries instead of being dissipated through the heating of braking disks. Upon acceleration of the car, the available electrical energy is used to help the car speed up by releasing this energy into a controlled electrical motor. More advanced systems may continuously propel the cars’ electrical motors. In order to keep the efficiency of the electrical hybrid motors at a maximum level, the position of the drive shaft must be continuously monitored. Tyco Electronics has developed a break-though inductive sensor, known as a “Reluctance Resolver,” that can help support reduced fuel consumption with in these new hybrid propulsion systems. The Reluctance Resolver is part of a system to measure shaft angles.  ...

World’s best vaccum seals tested but not touched

Sensor Technology Ltd TorqSense non-contact digital torque monitoring systemSensor Technology Ltd: TorqSense, a non-contact digital torque monitoring system that could guarantee an infinite lightness of touch has proven to be the only way to test the seals of super high performance vacuum systems. The ultimate fields of precision manufacture, such as electronics, biophysics and thin film deposition where tolerances are measured in atoms, are often conducted in hard vacuum to remove airborne contaminants and avoid the performance reducing effects of tiny air movements. However the vast majority of vacuum chamber designs require seals for rotary drive shafts (called rotary feedthroughs) and ‘feedthroughs’ for the passage of materials, components, tools and finished products. In high vacuum applications conventional seals are unlikely to be able to achieve the performance specifications required, so magnetic fluid seals are used.  ...

Fail-safe oxygen measuring system increases the efficiency of pellet heaters

fail-safe MF010-O-LC oxygen measuring system from J. Dittrich ElektronicIncreasing numbers of households are now turning to wood or pellet heaters for their central heating systems. Using the fail-safe MF010-O-LC oxygen measuring system from J. Dittrich Elektronic it is possible to determine the residual oxygen content in furnace exhaust gas. With the help of a controller, the excess air necessary for reasons of safety can be minimised and combustion optimised, thereby increasing efficiency. Emission values in the exhaust gas fall. In addition, it is possible to compensate for fluctuations in the calorific value of the fuel or in the fuel supply. Contrary to a lambda probe which measures the relative oxygen content, the extremely robust oxygen measuring system determines the absolute content, i.e. the oxygen partial pressure in the exhaust gas. For this reason, fluctuations in air pressure, humidity and temperature have no influence on the accuracy of the measurement. ...
