Lotus Hybrid Blooms |
| |
|
Sensor
Technology Ltd: The torque-current characteristics of a combined
motor-generator developed for a Lotus-based hybrid car have been
comprehensively mapped by a TorqSense digital torque sensor. Specialist
electromagnetic design company Elektro Magnetix (EMX) of Brighton
developed and tested the motor-generator for Lotus Engineering’s
EVE(Efficient, Viable, Environmental) Hybrid. This is a technology
demonstrator that is showcasing many of the medium term solutions that
will be used to reduce vehicle emissions. Jonathan Bremner of EMX
explains that the mapping was essential, but could not be done in-house.
“We are a design house, so tend to sub-contact testing to other
organisations. With this project we needed to plot out the full range of
performance, but had only a tight time window to do all the work.” So
EMX worked with a testhouse to design a simple yet effective test rig.
It was not long before the specialist engineers had settled on using a
TorqSense torque sensor from Sensor Technology asthey could design a rig
around it very easily, and then it was very quick and simple to use. ... |

Install Omron photosensors ten times as
fast! |
| |
With
their innovative SecureClick snap mounting system, the new E3FZ
photosensors from Omron Electronics are typically ten times
faster to install than ordinary square sensors, and three times faster
to install than conventional cylindrical sensors. By dramatically
reducing the time needed for installation, the new sensors provide big
cost savings, especially on large installations. The novel mounting
system used with E3FZ sensors completely eliminates the need for nuts
and screws – the sensors simply click into place in a suitably drilled
hole. Despite its speed and ease of use, however, the SecureClick
mounting system has been extensively evaluated and shown to be secure
even when exposed to high levels of vibration. Omron’s new high-performance
sensors feature the popular space-saving short-body M18 cylindrical
format, and incorporate high-intensity LED light sources for enhanced
sensing range. ... |

SONUS - The smallest and lightest
ultrasonic sensors |
| |
Baumer
Electric: The new miniature ultrasonic sensor generation SONUS with
its great performance is in the focus of general interest for good
reason. SONUS, currently the most compact ultrasonic sensors on the
market, excel with their tiny housing of just 10 x 14 x 27 mm. A housing
for countless applications, particularly for installation in the
smallest spaces or for the assembly of several sensors in the tightest
places. Ultrasonic technology permits objects to be detected regardless
of their color or transparency. Due to their small mass of less than 4
grams, they are optimally suited for installation in all light, quickly-moving
handling units. However, the performance data is anything but minute.
The scanning range is astounding at 200 mm, for the digitally switching
proximity sensors and retro-reflective types and also for the distance
measuring versions with analog voltage outputs. All three sensors have a
means of electronic Teach-in ... |

Metallic objects simply measured |
| |
The
distance information for the triangulation principle is obtained via the
reflection of the laser beam. Thereby, surface roughness in the sub-micrometre
range causes interference in the laser spot, whereby false measurement
results can be obtained. This physical effect is particularly
predominant in shiny objects and cannot be avoided using currently
available products on the market. Micro-Epsilon, as a specialist in
measurement technology, announces its new optoNCDT 2200LL, which also
makes reliable measurements on shiny metallic objects thanks to an oval
light spot. The point-shaped laser beam has now been widened using a
special cylindrical lens and projected onto the target. The light spot
is absorbed by a receiving array and evaluated. As the light spot is
averaged using a special software algorithm, interference is completely
filtered out. Another application area for the optoNCDT 2200LL is
structured surfaces, where the distance and not the structure itself
need to be measured. The distance information is not influenced by ... |

KELLER
AG: 1.5 billion people around the globe have no access to clean
water. Managing water as a resource is therefore the challenge of the
21st century. A significant part of the world’s water resources is
located underground. Large areas are surveyed using pressure sensors to
monitor changes in the water level in relation to usage as well as
rainfall. These sensors are inserted in wells up to 200 m in depth. The
major share of the cost of a measuring point is caused by the drilling
operation and the pipe inserted into the earth. Until now, pipes with an
inner diameter of 1 inch (2,54 cm) were mainly used, required by 22 mm
diameter sensors. KELLER’s new DCX-16 features a Ø 16 mm diameter

Flow-Sensor SS 20.60 HT, for high
temperature up to 350°C |
| |
SCHMIDT
Technology has developed a high temperature version of the SS 20.60
for the application in operating temperature up to 350°C - for short
time even 400°C. The sensor differs formally in the white ceramic tip.
Most of the modifications have been made inside the sensor and the
modules are designed according to the elevated specification. A complete
new designed electronic unit processes the results of measurement and
provides a digital and analog output. The new status indicator displays
information about the current flow velocity and the sensors status. The
measuring signal output of the temperature is new as well. Due to the
modular concept the sensor can be supplied with field bus interface. The
sensor with field bus interface delivers ready prepared measuring values
like Kg/hr or m³/min and thus dis-burdens the supervising PLC.
Additionally the sensor gives access to its status information and
allows the PLC to inform the user about defects of the sensor. ... |

El sistema escalable BU18 de HBM amplía
los límites de la calibración de fuerzas |
| |
HBM:

Pressure / temperature transmitter for
dual-mode engines |
| |
With
the approval of the Series 22 DT transmitter Keller AG für
Druckmesstechnik, Winterthur (Switzerland) has succeeded in moving
into the area of production engine applications that are governed by
extreme demands. So-called dual-mode vehicles have experienced a
tremendous boom due to the voluntary commitment of European car
manufacturers to reduce CO2 emissions to 140 g/km by 2008. These
vehicles can be operated using normal petrol during the start-up phase
and then with natural gas during continuous operation. The combustion of
natural gas such as methane (CH4) creates 25% less CO2 than petrol with
the same engine performance. The pan-European introduction and promotion
of this dual-mode technology has forced leading manufacturers to undergo
additional system optimisation that includes exact control of the gas
pressure and highly-dynamic measurement of the gas temperature directly
at the distributor (rail). Keller AG für Druckmesstechnik has developed
the transmitters in the Series 22 DT for precisely this type of
application. ... |

The
new Colibrys wide bandwidth capacitive accelerometers set new
performance standards on vibration sensing and are expected to displace
piezoresistive sensors in Health and Usage Monitoring Systems (HUMS),
Aeronautics, Railway technologies and Automotive crash testing
applications. The recognized high performance level of capacitive
sensors, well proven for inertial and seismic applications, is now also
available for vibration sensing. The ever increasing requirements on
vibration sensors in terms of reliability, long term stability, signal
to noise, robustness, size and power can not be met anymore by the
current piezoresistive sensor technology. The new extended bandwidth of
the Colibrys capacitive sensors, combined with a high degree of
miniaturization, make this new product family ideally suited to meet the
increasing requirements of vibration measurement systems. ... |

New Family of Signal Conditioners with
Isolated Grounds and Selectable Filters Aid in Vibration Testing of
Satellites and Automotive Components |
| |
PCB
Piezotronics has introduced a new family of rack mounted signal
conditioners, available with selectable filters or isolated grounds.
These signal conditioners are best suited for applications where case
ground piezoelectric sensors are used and could potentially cause ground-loop
noise, such as during aerospace or satellite component vibration testing,
automotive component testing, product testing, drop testing, and any
general vibration testing. Model 483C30 features eight channels with
true galvanic isolation of each input to output, which is also
selectable on/off per channel. Isolation is ideal for the removal of
ground loop noise caused by sensors which are electrically on ground.
Other features in this low-noise model include choice of ICP®, charge,
or voltage inputs; multiple charge input sensitivities (0.1, 1, 10 mV/pC);
incremental gain (x0.1 to x200); internal/external calibration; 4-order
10 kHz low pass filter; and Ethernet interface, for ease of setup with
supplied software. Other frequency filters are available as options. ... |

A world's first 112 pressure sensors in a
single mold: |
| |
Kistler
integrates online quality assurance into a 96-cavity mold for medical
technology. Kistler Instrumente AG is currently fitting two 96-cavity
molds for the production of insulin pen components with pressure sensors
for quality assurance. Each of the 96 cavities and each of the 16
manifolds will be equipped with a sensor, such that each mold will come
with a total of 112 sensors. The objective of using mold cavity pressure
sensors in injection molding these polypropylene components is to
establish automatic 100 % quality assurance and thus to ensure zero-defect
production. With a front diameter of only 1 mm, the Type 6183A… sensors
are the smallest so far used for cavity pressure measurement. The mold
maker adapts the front ends of the sensors to the contours of the cavity
wall, using erosion technology to fit both the sensors and the mold
inserts. ... |

Line scanner with integrated controller |
| |
According
to customers, increasingly more compact sensors are now also required
for line scanners. Innovative measurement technology company, Micro-Epsilon,
presents a new generation of line scanners. The most important
difference between the new Scancontrol 2700 and conventional line
scanners is the integrated controller. This means no other component is
required for the measured data evaluation. However, despite this, the
measuring head has very compact dimensions. This relative small size
means the scanner is ideal for use in automation systems, where space is
often restricted. Typical measurement tasks for the Scancontrol 2700 are
the measuring of profiles and the measurement of angles, gaps and
clearance. A small output module for DIN rail mounting is required for
conversion of data into common field-bus systems. Using this, the
profile data is optionally output as CAN-Bus, Profibus DP, Ethercat or
IEEE. The laser line scanner Scancontrol 2700 uses the triangulation
measurement principle for the two-dimensional acquisition of profiles on
the most varied of target surfaces. In contrast to the familiar point
laser sensors, ... |

Spot on: SoundPipe for zws Sensor |
| |
microsonic:
With its SoundPipe the zws-15 sensor measures levels in the smallest of
openings. The new SoundPipe can be used with each and every zws-15
sensor. It directs sound to the measuring point and thus measurements
can be taken in drill holes and openings with diameters under 3 mm.
Since the zws-15 sensor blind zone is inside the SoundPipe, measurements
can be taken directly as from the sound outlet opening. The tightly
bundled sound field is brought directly to the measuring point. A
typical field of application is measuring levels in microplate wells
which are used in medical analysis technology. The SoundPipe can be
directly positioned over the opening; this makes an exact measurement
possible. The attachment can also be used in scanning gaps of only a few
millimetres in width between two objects. ... |
