Kistler Torque Sensors Test New Jaguar
Steering Column |
| |
Kistler:
Located on the Rassau Industrial Estate at Ebbw Vale, Gwent, ZF Steering
Systems Nacam Ltd (Nacam) manufactures steering columns for most
European passenger car companies, which means that QA is of critical
importance. The thrust of the QA regime has always been to use the best
technology to minimize the possibility of human error compromising
product quality. Naturally, with safety critical components, the primary
objective is to ensure that a component does not fail in service but
there is the secondary consideration of protecting the company’s well-established
reputation for quality and reliability. For a number of years, Nacam has
used Kistler (www.kistler.com) sensors and monitoring systems in QA
applications and the latest is a test rig to ensure that the screw
threads in the universal joints for the new Jaguar XF are within
specification. The test rig, designed by Nacam with technical assistance
from Kistler, uses two Kistler Type 4502 miniature torque sensors to ... |

It's safer than you thought to belt up |
| |
|
Sensor Technology Ltd: Car seatbelts are now proven to be more
reliable than previously thought thanks to a chance discovery by test
rig builder Mindready Solutions in Belfast. When building a replacement
rig for a global seatbelt manufacturer they used a highly sensitive
transducer from Sensor Technology instead of a standard one, which
highlighted previously undetected large torque oscillations within the
spring retractor mechanism. “The oscillations were so massive that at
first we thought there was something wrong with our rig,” recalls
Mindready’s Nick Beckett, “but we went through everything with a fine
toothed comb several times and our results were proven valid. Further
tests on the seatbelts themselves then established that they are
actually more reliable than they were thought to be.” The test rig is
really quite simple. A motor rotates the reel spindle through 15 turns
and back, simulating the extraction and retraction of a standard belt to
its full extent, and the transducer records the changes in torque or 'force
curve' throughout the motion. The spring force generated is expected to ... |

New air bubble detectors for increased
patient safety |
| |
The
new sensors for air bubble detection from SONOTEC, also called
ABD, enable the identification of gas bubbles in flexible tubes or
metering boxes filled with fluids. There are several fields of
application in the medical sector such as dialysis. Here, the sensor is
able to observe the transport of body fluids and to alarm in case of a
failure. Furthermore, the sensors can be applied for blood- and nutrient
transfusions as well as for injectors. The utilisation as an empty/full
detector is another conceivable application for our ABD. The sensors
developed by SONOTEC have no contact with the fluids. The flexible tube
is pressed into the sensor clamp and it does not need a usually required
coupling medium. The procedure is not dependent on the fluid colour. Our
intelligent sensors are very appropriate to the medical technology and
to areas with highly hygienic standards. Even bubbles of a very small
size (until the lower micro-litre range) can be quickly and clearly
detected by our sensors. The ABD has a customised programmable

Insertion probe with new plastic handle |
| |
Insertion
probes from JUMO have been used successfully in the food industry
for many years. The market is increasingly demanding smaller designs.
Which is why a compact plastic handle has been developed for insertion
thermocouples and resistance thermometers. The new handle feels really
good, is practical and makes life easier. Not only that, but its low
weight ensures that the insertion probe does not slip out of the product
during cooking. The plastic used is food safe, resistant to oil-based
and acidic cleaning agents and suitable for temperatures up to 260 °C,
for brief periods as high as 300 °C. Of course, it has the usual
industry features such as protection rating IP 67, high mechanical
strength, imperviousness to steam and high pressure resistance. The
measuring insert can be set out as a thermocouple and resistance
thermometer in the familiar designs with one, two, three or four test
points. Other options include a concentric point or angled tip made from
stainless steel and different cable lengths and cable endings. Insertion
probes from JUMO comply. ... |

Baumer Miniature sensors - Small,
lightweight and precise |
| |
For
applications in restricted space, Baumer offers the most diverse
miniature sensors for convincing and precise solutions. The small IWRM
04 distance-measuring inductive sensors, with a diameter of 4 mm and a
housing length of only 30 mm, are the most compact inductive analog
sensors on the market. With a short response time of 0,5 ms and the high
resolution of 1 μm, they are without equal in this size class. The FHDK
04 optical miniature sensor provides a compelling argument with very
high efficiency background suppression. The Baumer developers were able
to accommodate this sensor in a housing measuring only 4 x 6 x 45 mm.
With a bracket for profiles and only one groove plate, this sensor can
be secured in any commercially available extrusion frame. Several
sensors may be operated next to one another without any mutual optical
interference. In addition, the IO-Link communications standard is
supported. Ultrasonic sensors ... |

Pin-point detection of glue traces |
| |
Leuze:
The system VSU12 comprising two ultrasound sensors and a separate
indicating unit was developed specifically for the reliable detection of
glued joints in paper webs. This system is able to recognize glue joints
independently of the roller and glue material, the adhesive tape colour
and the execution of the glue joint. As the ultrasound sensors are able
to recognize the glued joints either within a roller or between a main
and a secondary roller not only almost irrespective of the material,
colour and properties of the gluing material, but also independently of
the roller material, the same glue joint sensor can be used to process
not only paper but also film material. And furthermore, the system
adapts automatically after a change of material without even requiring a
teach-in process for the new material. All the operator does is to
preselect the basic material at the indicator unit once. The indicator
unit then adjusts automatically to the noise permeability of the roll
material. The maximum web speed at which this system ... |

Classic Machine Tool Metrology Book Now A
Free Download |
| |
|
Know Your Machine Tool by Tim Sheridan was released in 1991 and helped
machine tool metrologists, operators, and researchers measure and
understand the capabilities of their machine tools. The book is now a
free download from Lion Precision (sponsor and publisher) in the
Technical Library portion of their web site at www.lionprecision.com.
The book was the first to show practical, step-by-step processes for
measurements of spindle error motions according to the ANSI B89 standard
(Axes of Rotation, Methods of Specifying and Testing). Spindle error
motions on machine tools are responsible for errors in feature location,
feature roundness and surface finish. In disk drives, spindle error
motions limit data density. The maximum speed of high-speed drills is
limited in part by spindle error motions. Precision spindle and machine
tool manufacturers ... |

El transductor de fuerza en miniatura de
HBM supervisa procesos de montaje |
| |

Noncontact position sensor exploits FPGA
technology for higher performance |
| |
|
The new ECL202 eddy-current displacement/position sensor has
significantly improved thermal stability and immunity to electromagnetic
interference (EMI) as well as improved linearity and resolution. The
sensor employs FPGA technology enabling complex, proprietary
mathematical algorithms to achieve higher performance levels than purely
analog methods. According to Don Martin, president of Lion Precision,
“Using FPGA digital processing techniques, we can achieve performance
that simply is not possible with discrete analog electronics.” Digital
technology can very precisely detect the sensor’s signal and more easily
differentiate it from other electrical signals present in the sensing
environment. This means the sensor continues to work well in
electrically noisy environments such as near motor controllers or other
high-power switching electronics. Using this same proprietary method,
multiple ECL202 sensors can be positioned near each other without the
mutual interference usually experienced with eddy-current sensors. ... |

Filling Contents in Tanks - Accurate,
digital, battery powered, waterproof |
| |
Under
the name of Castello, Keller AG has introduced a flexible,
modular system for the accurate indication of the content of a liquid in
a tank. Castello offers a user-friendly way to represent the pressure
measurement at the bottom of a tank as the quantity of remaining liquid.
At the push of a button, the microprocessor performs the calculations
using the information of the tank shape and dimensions and displays the
remaining tank content quantity on the clearly legible 5-digit LED
display in the desired unit (litres, gallons etc.). The easy to use
software to configure Castello is free of charge. It contains the most
current tank shapes. Other tank shapes can be easily integrated at the
factory. The exclusive use of absolute pressure sensors in the Castello
system eliminates the use of capillary vented cables with all the
problems associated with a gauge pressure measurement. The Castello
enclosure integrates an air pressure sensor, ranged between 0,8 bar and
1,3 bar absolute. The sensors to measure the hydrostatic pressure at the
bottom of the tank are calibrated from 0,8 to 1,8 bar abs for tanks up
to 5 m in height, and 0,8 to 2,3 bar abs for tanks up to 10 m in height.
The pressure difference, calculated by the μP, is the relative

Measuring large distances using time-of-flight
measurement |
| |
Micro
Epsilon has extended its product range with new laser sensors. In
addition to the existing time-of-flight sensors there are four new
complementary models. Under the names optoNCDT ILR 1181, 1182, 1183 and
1191, these sensors provide new approaches to solving automation tasks.
The 80 Series functions according to the phase comparison principle,
whereby a precise distance measurement is possible. They achieve a
measuring range of 30m for use on diffuse reflecting surfaces and 150m
when using a special reflector, which guides the laser pulse back into
the optical system for large measuring distances. The optoNCDT ILR 1191
operates according to the “Time-of-Flight” principle and achieves a
measuring range of 3,000m with a reflector; a measuring range of 300m is
possible without using the reflector. With a linearity of between ±3mm
and ±5mm or ±20mm to ±0mm for the 1191 series and a repeat accuracy of
less than 0.5mm, these sensors are ideal for precision measurement tasks. ... |

New Parabolic Probe for the Detection of
Distant Compressed Air Leakages and Partial Discharges |
| |
SONOTEC’s
new parabolic probe for the SONAPHONE devices identifies sound emissions
in the ultrasonic frequency range caused by compressed air leakages and
electric partial discharges. The leakages and smallest leaks within
compressed air systems, industrial plants and machineries as well as
within hidden pipes are detected quickly and reliably. Even leakages
that are up to 20 m away from the testing site are detected due to the
great operating distance of the SONOSPOT. The parabolic probe also
identifies leakages at hidden spots. The use of the SONOSPOT leads to a
reduction of energy costs and to a higher safety in operations since
damages can be identified at a very early stage. The high sensor
sensitivity and the very precise directivity allow the detection of

estator garantiza datos seguros.

Fully Compensated Mini Pressure
Transmitter |
| |
KELLER
AG, the pressure measurement technology specialist, has now
introduced miniaturized absolute pressure transmitters (Pisello type,
series 20 P), featuring optimized temperature compensation and measuring
ranges from 10 bar to 600 bar. Keller developed the ingenious PromComp
principle as many as 20 years ago, and it can now be exploited to full
advantage thanks to the general miniaturization of electronics. A
circuit no larger than a cent coin compensates the Pisello pressure
transmitter perfectly against fluctuations in operating temperature. A
temperature sensor in the PromComp divides the temperature range into
fields with a width of 1.5 Kelvin each. Two values are assigned to each
field in an EEPROM: one value for the zero point and another for the
amplification, determined by mathematical interpolation in the
calibration process. During operation, the corresponding values are ‚switched
in‘ at the relevant temperatures. Temperature fluctuations of ... |

IO-Link sensors - innovation with true
value added! |
| |
Baumer
Electric: IO-Link is the new standard in the lower communication
layer supported by leading automation and sensor manufacturers. An IO-Link
sensor transmits standard digital or analog output signals and provides
an additional serial data communication with the control unit as master
to exchange parameters such as the measuring range, sensitivity, time
delay and operating mode. Because the serial data transmission needs no
additional wires and the output signals are compatible, it is possible
to use standard cables and connectors and combine or mix IO-Link devices
and standard devices. This advantage simplifies the entry, realization
and use of this new and easy technology. Baumer offers now an expanded
range of IO-Link products. From the smallest optical switches up to
ultrasonic and inductive distance sensors, a wide variety of
technologies and devices is available. ... |

Automatic defect inspection of reflecting
surfaces |
| |
The
reflectCONTROL range of surface inspection systems from Micro-Epsilon
has now been extended with new product variants. The RC-Robotic system
is intended for large objects such as complete automotive body shells.
Here, the optical part of the measurement system as a sensor is located
on the end effector of a robot arm. A measurement process covers an area
of approx. 70 x 30 cm; the robot moves the sensor to different positions
on the object to be inspected. The RC-Compact inspection system with
fixed sensor is available for smaller measuring objects and is ideal for
laboratory type inspection. The object to be inspected can be moved with
a measuring table that itself can move on three axes and can be tilted
for curved surfaces in order to inspect the complete object. The
measurement of such a part requires around 10 to 30 seconds and can be
automated for series production. This is achieved by generating a
typical measuring task in which the sensor moves to stored measurement
positions ... |

its ODS 96B, Leuze electronic is offering an optical distance sensor
designed for wide-ranging different fields of application. Exceptionally
fast measurement cycles make these distance sensors the fastest in their
class, permitting measurement applications in highly dynamic processes.
A new version has now been launched which permits the user to select any
optional light spot size between S and XL when using laser light sources.
ODS 96B optical laser distance sensors from Leuze electronic work on the
basis of the triangulation principle, using the very latest CCD
technology for evaluation. They are designed for continuous distance
measurements, position monitoring and for dynamic product gauging
applications of the kind required on conveyor lines. They cover a
measurement range of between 60 and 2000 millimetres. Performing
cyclical measurements within intervals of just milliseconds, they are
able to pick up dynamic processes up to five times faster than
comparable products. This means a more finely meshed measurement grid,
ensuring more precise and detailed information with more stable measured
values and greater process efficiency. Alongside high-speed measurement
processes, the ODS 96B also offers extreme accuracy, a resolution of 0.1
mm and repeat accuracy of 0.5%. One of the most striking features of
