PCB Piezotronics Releases New High Temperature Microphone and
Preamplifier |
| |
PCB
Piezotronics, Inc., a world leader in vibration,
acoustic, pressure, force, and torque sensors, announces the
release of a new high-temperature microphone and preamplifier.
Model HT378B02 is designed to overcome high temperature testing
challenges associated with acoustic measurements in
environmental chambers or other high temperature applications.
Previously, test engineers had access to microphones with 120°C
capability but were limited by the preamplifier, which houses
the electronics and powers the sensor, but operates only to
70°C. PCB's breakthrough technology allows operating
temperatures up to 120°C for both the microphone and
preamplifier. This allows the microphone to be used to its
maximum frequency specifications. Prior to this innovation
engineers were forced to use costly probe microphones with
limited frequency bandwidths. ... |

Miniature In-Line Charge Amplifier for High Temperature Applications,
Model 4752B |
| |
Dytran
Instruments, Inc., a leading manufacturer of
piezoelectric and DC MEMS accelerometers, force and pressure
transducers and associated electronics, has introduced the model
4752B, a miniature in-line charge amplifier designed for use
with high temperature charge mode accelerometers. This IEPE unit
is powered using constant current sources and is compatible with
IEPE designated instrumentation. Charge amplifiers convert
electrostatic, high impedance charge signals generated by charge
generators, such as charge mode accelerometers, to lower
impedance voltage mode signals that can drive longer cables with
signal degradation. Model 4752B is specifically designed to
operate with high temperature charge mode sensors because of its
ability to tolerate very low levels of insulation resistance.
This is a typical characteristic of high temperature
piezoelectric accelerometers, and would force a conventional
charge amplifier to shutdown. The Dytran model 4752B can accept
sensors with insulation resistance as low as 100kOhms without
any deterioration in performance. ... |

Lightning speed transfer on the data highway, Optical data coupler
achieves fast Ethernet level |
| |
Pepperl+Fuchs:
At present, the communication and control of automated logistic
systems is achieved almost exclusively using fieldbus systems.
Conversely, the integration of new Ethernet-based networks is
often problematic due to the inadequate performance of the
transmission media used. The latest generation of optical data
couplers can overcome these challenges with ease. Devices from
the Pepperl+Fuchs LS680-DA series are the first optical data
couplers on the market that can achieve a full fast Ethernet
bandwidth of 100 Mbit/s. In addition to standard TCP/IP,
protocol-free data transmission allows the transfer of all
standard industrial Ethernet dialects. The usual limitations of
WLANs in high-rack storage facilities, for example, are now a
thing of the past. In addition to use as a communication channel
for control systems, the door is open to a wide range of other
applications such as camera-assisted services that transfer
video streams from IP cameras. ... |

The Tailor-made Measuring Shaft |
| |
There
is rarely much room spare in modern machines, due to designs
that optimise the use of space. Thus the traditional method of
attaching instrumentation to the machine elements is not always
possible. MANNER Sensortelemetrie offers
high-precision measuring technology for such applications. The
flexible circuit board and the rotor antenna unit, with a height
of only 3 mm, can be virtually wrapped around the shaft. The
measuring technology is also well-protected below an oil-proof
and waterproof encapsulation. Regardless of whether shafts or
flanges, sleeves or shaft couplings, every component can become
an intelligent measurement object. This way, the original parts
are used and no effort is required to design special sensors.
The measuring range and the zero point can be remotely adjusted
online with a 16-bit resolution (automatic zeroing). Torques,
strains, forces, temperatures, and vibrations can be recorded
within an ambient temperature range of 25°C to 160°C. ... |

Easy and cost-effective flow measurement |
| |
SCHMIDT
Technology: There are different measurement principles
for measuring flow velocities and volumetric flows in air and
gases. The following comparison clearly shows why the thermal
anemometry is, in most of the cases, an adequate solution. To
determine the flow velocities and/or the volume flows, it is
necessary to know the characteristics of the possible measuring
processes in order to choose the ideal solution for the
respective requirements. Pitot tubes, orifice plates, Venturi
tube or the thermal anemometry are normally used for this
purpose. The Prandtl pitot tube: The flow velocities can be
measured using a Prandtl pitot tube. The dynamic pressure is
measured as a difference between the total pressure and the
static pressure via two measuring connections of the pitot tube.
The pitot tube measurement is relatively insensitive regarding
contamination or flow turbulences. Due to its design, the pitot
tube "blocks" the flow profile to a very low degree which causes
a slight loss of pressure. Moreover, the pressure and the
temperature of the medium must be also measured for a precise
determination of the flow velocity. Due to the principle, the
dynamic pressure increases squared compared to the flow
velocity. Since the pressure increases very slowly at the
beginning, this measurement method is not suitable for low flow
velocities such as they occur in the room air monitoring. ... |

Draw-wire sensors with a plastic line |
| |
The
use of a "wire" of synthetic material in draw-wire sensors is
ensuring additional application areas for the wireSENSOR P85
sensors from Micro-Epsilon. Thanks to its high
tensile strength, its low expansion and extremely long service
life, it is technically equal in every way to conventional steel
wire while its lower weight is a further bonus. Even the cable
connector is completely free of metal, since the ring eyelet is
made entirely of plastic. It is used, for example, in high
voltage areas where no conductive connection between the
measuring system and the target is allowed for safety reasons.
In medical technology too, the absence of metal offers major
advantages. The plastic line means there is no interference when
taking X-ray films or when scanning with MRI systems. This makes
the P85 an ideal sensor for such applications. The flexible and
modular construction concept of the draw-wire sensor means that
sensors with plastic lines are now available as OEM versions
with many other sensor series. The economical MK series also ... |

Capacitive gap sensor |
| |
The
new capacitive sensors from Micro-Epsilon
capaNCDT CSG are specially developed to measure gap width.
Sensor electrodes are applied to the top front and back on a
circuit board that has a width of 20cm. Using the sensor
electrodes and the differential method, the gap width can be
determined very precisely while moving the sensor into the gap.
A special feature is the sensor’s flexible probe. This also
enables the sensor to be used in applications where the
measurement object is difficult to access. Using the capaNCDT
CSG, gaps of 0.9mm up to 4.9mm can be measured at a resolution
of up to 90nm. However, metal objects and a clean measurement
gap are required for these sensors. In terms of the electronics
for the capaNCDT 6500, signals of both electrodes are
immediately calculated with the gap width. Furthermore, the
sensor can be replaced or connected to any other electronics
supplied by Micro-Epsilon. With the same sensor dimensions, the
new capaNCDT CSE offers a measuring range that is 2.5 times
larger. As the CSE sensors are equipped with a shielding
electrode which is set back, the sensor dimensions are
considerably smaller. Therefore, these sensors show significant
benefits while also offering the same measuring range. Since the
sensors are ... |

Q.series A106, Measurement with strain gage bridges
– without compromises |
| |
Gantner
Instruments: The subject of carrier frequency or direct current feed
for strain gage sensors has occupied users for decades. There
are subtle differences even in the selection of the carrier
frequency. Long connection leads and high carrier frequencies
can quickly lead to capacitive overmodulation. Here a low
carrier frequency helps, however also reduces the dynamic
quality of the measurement. Then perhaps it would be better to
use DC voltage – except for the high noise and reduced
stability. These problems do not arise with the A106 module,
available in the new Q.brixx und Q.raxx (19“, 3 HU) series as
well as the Q.bloxx series. Because with this 2-channel module
it is possible to configure the sensor feed: Strain gage
quarter, half and full bridges: DC, carrier frequency 600 Hz or
carrier frequency 4.8 kHz, each 2.5 V and 5 V. For inductive
bridges, LVDT, RVDT: Carrier frequency 4.8 kHz, 2.5 V or 5 V.
The measuring rate is 10 kHz, the measuring frequency 1 kHz; at
carrier frequency 600 Hz the measuring frequency is 100 Hz. The
module offers two separately configurable, electrically isolated
channels. ... |

The world’s fastest ultrasonic sensor for highly transparent objects |
| |
Baumer:
With a response time of merely 1.3 ms, the new ultrasonic sensor
UNAM 12 is the world’s fastest and comes very close to a
photoelectric sensor. Twenty times faster than conventional
ultrasonic sensors it is destined for highly dynamic processes.
This, and the additional ability to detect very closely placed
objects, leads to a considerable increase in efficiency. UNAM 12
detects ultra-transparent packaging materials such as foils or
bottles as well as wafers and glass in order to ensure a smooth
process flow. To do so with maximum reliability, the ultrasonic
sensing principle guarantees impeccable operation regardless of
the degree of soiling. Beyond that, the sensor versions with a
special beam columnator come with a very narrow sonic beam and,
therefore, are able to reliably identify individual objects with
even the smallest separation distances. The narrow sonic beam
also allows for the sensor to be mounted behind a protective
wall and detect objects through narrow gaps in the wall. Thanks
to the lateral accuracy of 0.5 mm, the sensor also is extremely
precise. ... |

PCV Data Matrix Positioning System |
| |
Pepperl+Fuchs:
The information in Data Matrix code (2D-code) is encoded on a
square area as a pattern of dots. Compared to one-dimensional
barcodes (1D code), the information density per unit area is
clearly increased. Why not use this code as the basis of a new
positioning system?! Individual Data Matrix codes can be
positioned horizontally or vertically along a path which can be
read and decoded with a camera-based reading head and the exact
position output in x and y directions. The benefits are
striking, for example, the highest data integrity, slim code
band for the narrowest mounting sites and smallest curve radii
are possible. Because a minimum of 6 codes are always read,
there is a high code redundancy. Even with a lot of
contamination or damage, the exact position is reliably
determined, therefore meeting the strict requirements of
material handling. ... |

string.CB, String Monitor Box |
| |
Gantner
Instruments: In large solar systems monitoring and
troubleshooting becomes more and more complex. Each operator is
interested in finding errors in PV modules, strings, or a group
quickly because they can reduce the amount of energy produced
and the life of the system greatly. A string.CB generator
connection box can be used to connect the individual solar
module strings in a photovoltaic installation in parallel and
connect them to the inverter using larger cable cross sections.
8, 16 or 24 PV-strings can be connected. The integrated
string.bloxx allows precise monitoring of the DC side of
photovoltaic installations independently of the inverter. Thus,
defects, contamination, theft or misinterpretation of individual
strings are detected and corrected promptly and accurately. The
design of the whole generator connection box (cable, connectors,
plugs housing ect.) is consequently laid out for the use in a
1000 VDC environment. With string.CB Gantner Instruments GmbH is
offering an „All in One“- concept, that includes analog inputs
for current, voltage and temperatuer, digital I/O, relay output
as well as ... |

SCHMIDT
Technology: SCHMIDT® sensor ball valves are the ideal
solution for the easy installation and de-installation of
immersion sensors into and from pipe systems in compressed air
systems or industrial processes without interrupting
substantially the operation of the system. These sensor ball
valves are physically similar to conventional ball valves but
they are provided with an additional opening for the
installation of the immersion sensors. If not fitted with a
sensor, the opening is sealed with a tight sealing cap. To
introduce the sensor, the sensor ball valve must only be closed
and then opened again. SCHMIDT® sensor ball valves are suitable
for air or non aggressive gases and are available for all common
pipe diameters from 1" to 2". For pipe diameters bigger than DN
65, it is recommended to use a SCHMIDT® straight-way ball valve
with welded nipple. ... |

level, pressure, and flow sensors, miniature solenoid valves,
and fluidic systems announced the launch of the new CT-1000
potentiometric level sensors for OEM and end user applications.
The CT-1000 sensors provide highly accurate continuous level
gauging for the filling of tanks or continuous separating layer
coverage in nearly all electrically conductive liquids with
resolution of ±1mm independent of pressure, temperature and
density. One of the biggest assets of the sensor is the
extremely short measuring times in the millisecond range. The
sensor is suitable for a wide-range of tanks with lengths from
8″ to 19.7′ (6 meters) and is available with 4-20mA output or
with Hart protocol. Built from robust stainless steel material,
the CT-1000 Series offers versions that can handle temperature
ranges up to 390°F (200°C) and pressure ranges up to 2,175 PSI
(150 bar). CT-1000 fluid sensors operate according to the

Online camera combines thermal image with visual image for the first
time |
| |
The
Optris GmbH continues the market introduction
of a new, extensive infrared camera series with the introduction
of the optris PI200 thermal imaging camera with BI-SPECTRAL
technology. “The new BI-SPECTRAL technology integrates two
established camera technologies in one stationary device.
Through a visual camera, the optris PI200 is able to combine the
conventional thermal image with a visual one. Thereby, both
images are displayed in real time and are being recorded for
eventual analysis.” informs managing director Dr.-Ing. Ulrich
Kienitz. The integrated combination of a visual image (VIS) and
a thermal image (IR) via one single stationary camera is a
significant step in the development of imaging temperature
measurement systems. The optris PI200 will be applicable in
areas where so far CCD cameras and thermal imaging cameras were
used separately. Examples are the installation in storage pits
and open spaces for early fire detection, at convoyer belts for
temperature control of bulk material or within production
processes for visual and thermal documentation. The optris PI200
thermal imaging camera displays infrared images with up to 96 Hz
(images per second) with 160x120 pixels ... |

Ultrasonic sensors assist in packing of fresh flowers |
| |
SNT
Sensortechnik AG: Fresh cut flowers that are shipped
internationally in large quantities, must be fresh, but still
efficiently processed and packaged very gently. In this
flower-packing machine it has to be detected when a bunch of
flowers is ready in the tub for packing. An ultrasonic sensor of
the UPR series (see circle) looks down from above on the flowers
and outputs a “present / not present” signal. The ultrasonic
sensor was chosen because it is able to detect the very
different shapes, colors and textures of the flowers reliably. ... |

| |
A
new high-speed inspection system has been developed for the
automobile industry, based on Micro-Epsilon's
scanCONTROL 2710 system. It detects the quality of adhesive
beads as soon as they have been applied during the vehicle
assembly process. The BeadMonitor system, developed in the UK,
measures the height and width of the polyurethane adhesive beads
while they are being applied to the edges of the screen. The
sensor head is mounted directly behind the nozzle at the end
effector of a robot. The sensor head can be easily set and
configured. It is also possible to adapt the sensor to other
applications quickly and simply. The scanCONTROL 2710 profile
scanner offers a number of interfaces, so ensuring user-friendly
operation with a variety of software platforms. The measurement
range can be set to 10, 25 or 100 mm - or even up to 600 mm.
Image quality is an important criterion, as it is vital that the
sensor can detect the black shiny surface of the beads of
adhesive. During the evaluation ... |
